Defect Detection and Circumferential Damage Localization ofBent Pipes with Different Curvature Radii

Abstract:To improve the defect detection method of various pipeline structures,the defect detection of bent pipes with different curvature radii was studied.First,starting from the propagation theory of ultrasonic guided wave in hollow pipe,the dispersion curve in the range of O-1OO kHz was drawn,and the mode transition of L(0,2) mode guided wave at the bend was analyzed,concluding that the damage echo contains F(1, 1) and (204号 L(0,2) modes. Furthermore,the L(0,2) mode echo was extracted according to the diffrence of them in propagation velocity.Second,a simulation model wasbuiltto study the detection effctof defects in diferent positions of bent pipes with diferent curvature radii.The research results show that the reflection echo of damages at intrados and both sides of the bent pipe is weak,where the defect detection is the most dificult.Energy accumulation occurs at extrados,where the defect detection is easier.The defects at intrados and extrados of the bentpipe with smaller curvature radius have higher reflection coeffcient to the guided wave,where the detection effct is good. While the bent pipe with larger curvature radius only has better detection efect for the defects at the extrados. Finall,basedon theabove conclusions,a varietyof widths ofdamages were set in bent pipes with diferent curvature radii,and an interval maximum method based on the propagation characteristics of guided waves in bent pipes was proposed,realizing circumferential localization of damages at bent pipes.The study results provide reliable technical support to bent pipe defect detection and circumferential damage localization.
