Abstract："Chidu（尺牍）"isadisyllabiccompoundwordformedbythecombinationof "Chi（尺）"and"Du"，anditisalso writen as "Chidu（赤牍）"after theSong Dynasty， meaning "a woodentablet onechilong".The term "Chidu"frstappeared in Recordsofthe GrandHistorianbySima QianintheWestemHanDynastywhere itreferredtooffcialdocumentsormemorials. Inancienttimes，theterm "Chidu"was primarilyusedtodenote "leters"or "writings".Byemploying research methods from semantics，gentic linguistics，andquantitative linguistics，thispapersystematicallyexamines historical documents tatcontain theterm"Chidu"，revealingitsspeificmeaningsandusagepaemsacrossdiferenthistoricalperiods，anditisfoundtatthe semantic scopeof theterm varies across diferent dynasties.The term was frequentlyused inboth ancientand modern tmes and is acommon word. Its usage frequency peaked during the Qing Dynasty and remained widely used inthe Republic of China period.Althoughtheterm"Chidu"has faded fromdailylife incontemporarytimes，ithasnotvanishedcompletelybuthas become an elegant term.
