Dilemmas and optimization paths of cultivating postgraduates' innovative ability

Abstract: Cultivating innovative capabilities in postgraduates is critical for constructing an innovation-driven nation and implementing the national talent strategy.However,significant challenges remain in this endeavor in China. This study aims to systematically identify the key constraints hindering the cultivation of postgraduates’innovative capabilities and explore effective optimization pathways. Through comprehensive analysis,the research investigates the prominent issues and underlying causes within the current cultivation system. Key findings include:The prevalent evaluation system, prioritizing outcomes over processes and quantity over quality,stifles intrinsic motivation for original innovation. Insuficient supervisory engagement or guidance styles overly focused on skill transfer while neglecting intellectual inspiration constrain innovative potential. Scarcity of interdisciplinary course offerings and reliance on traditional teaching methods impede knowledge synthesis and intellctual exchange.Limited opportunities for independent research and low participation in high-challenge projects hinder practical innovation capacity. An academic culture fostering open collboration and risk-taking needs to be further strengthened. Based on theoretical analysis and empirical evidence,the study proposes a systematic optimization framework:reforming the academic evaluation system to emphasize process assessment and innovation potential;establishing mechanisms to enhance supervisors’competencies and motivation byintegrating mentorship with ideological-political guidance;developing an interdisciplinary, project-based,and research-oriented curriculum and pedagogy;constructing multi-tiered platforms for scientific research training and innovation practice;and fostering an academic ecosystem that encourages exploration,tolerates failure,and promotes open collaboration. This research offers theoretical insights and practical implications for deepening postgraduate education reform and enhancing the cultivation of high-level innovative talents.
