Progress in electrocatalytic decomposition of water by transition metal compounds

Abstract: With the continuous development of production'technology, transition metal compounds with abundant content,as substitutes for noble metal-based materials,have attracted much attention due to their outstanding electrocatalytic water decomposition activity,low cost and easy accessbility. This paper reviews the basic principle of electrocatalytic water decomposition reaction,the application of transition metal compounds in electrocatalytic water decomposition,and theperformance optimization strategiesof catalytic materialsfor electrocatalytic water decomposition. In the part of electrocatalytic water decomposition of transition metal compounds, the applications of transition metal sulfides,oxides, nitrides, phosphides and carbides and other materials in electrocatalytic water decomposition are elaborated in detail. In the section on performance optimization strategies,the methods for preparing high-performance catalysts to enhance catalytic activity,such as doping effect,defect control,heterostructure construction, synergistic effect and self-supporting substrate construction,are mainly introduced.
