Abstract: Ilness narrative in literarytradition has long served as a vehicle not only for individual suffering but also for refracting sociocultural structures and power dynamics—a dimension strikingly manifested in Alice Munro's Dear Life. This study examines three stories from the collection to analyze Munro's representation of illess.By investigating the diseases aflicting her male and female protagonists, it demonstrates how Munro deconstructs conventional gender atributes:male characters are released from monolithic, authoritative masculine stereotypes, while new female subjectivities are constructed. Through illness naratives,Munro not only dismantles gender binaries but also iluminates the body politics and collective unconscious embedded in rural Canadian society. Ilness thus becomes a medium for Munro to critique social discipline and challnge the colonial modernity inherent in medical discourse. By reframing the paradigm of ilness metaphor from a female perspective,Munro deepens the national expression of Canadian literature and offers a cross-cultural reference for global gender studies, thereby fulfiling herrole as a literary healer who diagnoses and treats societal maladies.
