(School of Foreign Studies,Anhui Polytechnic University,Wuhu,Anhui 241ooo, China)
Abstract: Chinua Achebe's No Longer at Ease unveils the identity predicament of African intelectuals during postcolonial transformation through the tragic fate of its protagonist, Obi, presenting complex cultural landscape of Africa. As a Western-educated returmee, Obi becomes entangled in the fundamental clash between Western modernity and Igbo traditional values. His schisms in language, values, and behaviors leave him alienated from both the colonizers' modern framework and his indigenous heritage, resulting in profound cultural dislocation. Although Obi's attmpts to reconcile these two cultures ultimately end in failure, Achebe does not dismiss the possibility of cultural fusion. Instead,he emphasizes the need to reconstruct subjectivity through critical dialogue while acknowledging historical trauma, ultimately achieving a creative transformation oftradition. The novel also explores the older generation's adherence to and preservation ofcultural identity, expressing concerns about the younger generation's departure from tradition. Achebe's reflections on cultural rupture and continuity, as well as identity crisisand pursuit, provide a crucial literary framework for understanding the modernization path of non-Western societies.
