Abstract:This paper focuses on the use-quality of circulation spaces (espaces de distribution) in French social collective housing, exploring howarchitects, under the constraints of high-densitydevelopment, land sobriety, and spatial compression, strategicallyactivate intermediate spaces between dwelling units to reconfigure neighborly relations and shared daily life. The study highlights the growing inadequacy of traditional housing types in responding to diverse household structures and evolvingresidential needs, and argues that the ambiguityand openness of intermediate spacesmake themacritical medium for enhancing spatial quality.Through in-depth analysis of two social housing projects-by Plan Comun and Sophie Delhay-the paper illustrates how shared landings, corridors, andexternal walkwaysare reimagined as productive spatial devices with both social and environmental value. These reappropriated circulationareas improve lighting and ventilation whilealso servingas platforms for informal use, neighborlyinteraction, and the soft expansionof private living boundaries.Thearticle calls fora renewed architectural approach to circulation spaces within today's highly standardized housing production, framing themas negotiated terrains and generativesitesof everyday life.Bydoingso, itoffersasustainable design perspective for the future of French social housing.
