A Cognitive Analysis of Formal Representations of Noun Group in Academic Discourse Abstract of NAME:A Case Study of “Classifier + Thing"

Abstract:“Classifier + Thing’ is widely used in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering(NAME) academic abstract,but the cognitive pathand rationale of“Classifier + Thing”inacademicabstracts of NAME need to be explored in depth. The study focuses on the noun group “Classifier + Thing" and analyzes its cognitive path and rationale in the academic abstracts based on ShipDEAP Corpus. Three results are found in this study. Firstly,the cognitive process of “ Classifier + Thing” at the conceptual structure-semantic level is a manifestation of grammatical metonymy. The dynamic and static conversion between conceptual structure and semantics is primarily realized through “processaction”“process-result” and“usage-structure”in this corpus. Secondly,the formal representation of“ Classifier + Thing” begins with“Thing” determination,which is the basis for the choice of “Clasifier”.This process adheres to the principle of cognitive economy. Finally,the process of formal representation is influenced by the academic discourse genre,which folows the restricted language theory.
