The Synergistic Effects and Spatial Mechanisms of the Digital Economy on Urban Pollution ReductionandCarbonEmissionReduction

Abstract:The digital economy presents significant opportunities for China to address the intertwined challenges of climatechange and environmental polution.Despite its promise,empirical research examining the impact of thedigital economy on the collaborative governance of urban polltion reduction and carbon emision reduction remains sparse. Grounded inthetheoryof colaborative governance,this essayutilizes paneldatafrom 243 cities in Chinaand employs fixedeffects models,mediation fect models,and SDMtoempirically examine thesynergisticefectsand spatial mechanisms of the digital economy on urban pollution reductionandcarbon emission reduction.Research findings:the digital economy significantly reduces the emission intensity and growth rates of urban PM2.5and CC ,thereby engenderingasynergisticefectinbothpollutionandcarbonreduction.Thisefectisparticularlypronounced insmall to medium-sized cities and those exhibiting robust green digital governancecapabilities.Spatial effectanalysis revealsa positive spatial spilloverin thecollaborative governanceof urban polltionreductionand carbon emissonreduction, althoughthespillverefectatributabletothedigitaleconomyitself isnotsignificant.Mechanismtestsindicatethatthe digital economyfacilitates collaborative governance of urban pollutionreductionandcarbon emission reduction through multiplechannels,including the adoptionof cleanerenergy,enhancement of energyeficiency,increased public environmental participation,and the mitigation of industrial structure distortions.
