Recent advances on ear-EEG electrodes for non-invasive brain-computer interfaces

Abstract:Intheresearchofbrain-computer interface(BCI),thehaironthescalpsurfacerestrictstheabilityof traditional scalp electroencephalogram(EEG) electrodes to capture neural signals.Ear-EEG electrodes effectively avoid contact with hair and can collect EEG signals comparable to those obtained from the scalp,offring a novel approach to EEG signalacquisition.This article systematically reviews.The recent progres inear-EEG electrodes is systematicaly reviewed,focusing on theirdesign principles and key performance of various in-ear electrodes and around-ear electrodes.It also discusses the advantages and limitations ofear-EEG electrodes compared with traditionalscalpEEGelectrodes,aswellasmethods toddresstheselimitations.Furthermore,thisreviewprospectsfor thefuturedevelopment directions ofear-EEG electrodes,pointing outthe opportunities and challenges they face.
