Research on the active ingredients of Hovenia acerba Lindl. extract and its regulatory effect on gut microbiota

Abstract： The active ingredientsand probiotic function of the methanol extract of Hovenia acerba Lindl.，rich in polyphenols，were studied，providing reference value for the development and utilization of the methanol extract. The active ingredients and regulatory efect on gut microbiota of the methanol extract from Hovenia acerba were analyzed and tested by using gas chromatography/mass spectrometry （GC/MS） and high performance liquid chromatography （HPLC） combined with fermentation model in vitro.The results showed thatthe methanol extract of Hovenia acerba contains 7-Hydroxy-4-（methoxymethyl）coumarin， （4-Bromo-2- chlorophenoxy）acetic acid，thymidine，and sibiricose A6. Additionally，the methanol extract of Hovenia acerba quantitatively detected phenolic substances suchas gallicacid，ferulicacid，vanillicacid，and catechin，which contribute to its antioxidant capacity.The methanol extract of Hovenia acerba can promote the growth of intestinal probiotics and increases the content of short-chain fatty acids （SCFAs），a metabolite of gut microbiota.In conclusion，it is expected that the application potential of Hovenia acerba in the fieldof intestinal health and product development willbe tapped，as it has been demonstrated that the methanol extract from Hovenia acerba Lindl. possesses various active ingredients and exhibits a regulatory function on gut microbiota.
