AbstractIn order to explore the allelopathic efect of aqueous extracts of traditional Chinese medicines on seed germination of two kinds of weeds (Portulaca oleracea and Setaria viridis) in field, the aqueous extractsof five kinds of traditional Chinese medicines (Polygoni Cuspidati Rhizoma Et Radix,Sophorae Flavescentis Radix,Artemisiae Argyi Folium,Rehmanniae Radix, Scutellariae Radix) at 10O and 200g⋅L-1 were used to study their effects on seed germination and seedling growth of the two species of weeds, which was expected to explore a new direction of“traditional Chinese medicines for weeding”,and provide references for development of herbicides derived from traditional Chinese medicines and controlof weeds. The results showed that the five kinds of aqueous extracts exhibited allelopathic inhibitory effcts on germination of the two kinds of weeds, and most treatments reached a significant level with the inhibitory intensity showing S. viridis>P.oleracea. In terms of seedling growth, the five kinds of aqueous extracts at 100g⋅L-1 and 200g⋅L-1 showed significant allelopathic inhibitory effects on root length of S . viridis and P . oleracea. The aqueous extract of Polygoni Cuspidati Rhizoma Et Radix at 100g⋅L-1 and 200g⋅L-1 significantly promoted the seedling height of S viridis and P . oleracea, while that of the other four kinds of traditional Chinese medicines showed varing effects on seedling height of the two kinds of weeds, which exhibited inhibitory efects in most cases but promoting effects in few cases. In sum, the response of seed germination and seedling growth of P . oleracea and S . viridis to theallelopathic effects of the five kinds of aqueous extracts were different. The comprehensive index of allelopathiceffects indicated that the aqueous extract of Scutellariae Radix had greater inhibitory efects on seed germination and seedling growth of the two kinds of weeds.
