Analysis of the current situation, challenges, and high-quality development pathways of
China's apple industry

Abstract: China’s apple industry produces over 5O million tons annually, accounting for more than 55% of global output, thus holding a significant scale advantage. However, quality improvement remains constrained by several botlenecks: the breeding system lags behind, with varietal structures misaligned with consumer upgrades; orchard management relies heavily on manual labor with insuffcient mechanization; and post-harvest handling and processing are underdeveloped, resulting in poor storability,low processing rates,and a short value chain.The existing core problems and in-depth challenges from the aspects of breeding innovation, cultivation techniques and post-harvest processing were sorted out. The pathways including varietal optimization, adoption of green and smart cultivation, and enhancement of post-harvest handling and high-value utilization were put forward.
