Abstract:Ahot rolling drum ofa certain model exhibited abnormal vibration during operation after 5 months of online service.Disassembly revealed fracture of the hollow shaft at the tie rod position within the drum. Failure analysis of the fractured hollw shaft was conducted through macroscopic inspection,scanning electron microscopy (SEM),chemical compositionanalysis,as wellas hardnesstesting,mechanical property evaluation,and metallographic examination.The results indicate that distinct fatigue striations were present on the fracture surface, confirming fatigue fracture as the failure mode.Both the mechanical properties and hardnessvalues of the hollow shaft failed to meet design requirements.The presence of substantial undisslved ferrite and non-metallic inclusions in the microstructure at the fracture zone were identified as the primary causes of fatigue initiation sites.
