The Main Varieties and Breeding Direction of Pomegranate in China

Abstract:Pomegranate(Punica granatumL)isa deciduous shrub ortree of the genus Pomegranate inthe family of Lythraceae, andthe pomegranatefruit contains extremelyrichnutritional value anduniqueflavor, which isloved by consumer.Asacountry withalong history ofpomegranatecultivation, China has now formed six major pomegranate core production areas in Shandong,Henan, Shaanxi, Yunnan, Anhui and Xinjiang.This article systematically reviewed the main cultivated varieties in various regions, qualities and uses.The‘Daqingpitian'from Zaozhuang was renowned foritsthin skin, sweet taste,and strong resistanceto pests and diseases.The‘Yu Dazi' from Henan was characterizedbyitslargefruit sizeandhigh juiceyield, making itsuitableforstorage.The‘ShaanxiDazi'from Shaanxi was distinguished by its exceptionally large fruit and excellnt cold resistance.Meanwhile,the‘Tunisia Soft Seed'from Yunnan wasfavored forits soft seeds,whichwereeasy tochew,making itparticularlysuitable for consumption by theelderly and children.In view of thecurrent breeding research focusing on highyield,early maturity,fruit traits andother traditionalbreeding,this paper proposed that in the future, we should focus on breaking through the traditional breeding model and improving the cold tolerance and storage toleranceof pomegranate by molecular technology,so as to promote China'sresearch on the pomegranateresources, and to help realize the fruit industry to increase production and increase the income of the fruit growers.
