Improvement of Schnerr-Sauer cavitation model based on correction of bubble sphericity

Abstract: To address the significant discrepancy between the spherical bubble assumption in the original Schnerr-Sauer cavitation model and actual bubble deformation in flow,this study developed a modified cavitation model coupling sphericity with pressure-related quantities through large eddy simulation method analysis of bubble deformation characteristics in flow fields. Numerical simulations of unsteady cavitating flow around a 3D NACA66 hydrofoil were conducted using both the modified model and the original Schner-Sauer model at a cavitation number of 1.25,obtaining bubble distribution patterns and hydrodynamic characteristics. The results demonstrate that the modified model significantly improves cavitation flow prediction accuracy: it captures more extensive cavity regions and longer atached cavities that better match experimental observations; improves prediction accuracy of cavity shedding by 9.41% ; and enhances the prediction accuracy of instantaneous pressure fluctuation amplitude by approximately 28.00% . The study results provide certain reference for advancing the understanding of unsteady cavitation flow mechanisms and related engineering applications.
