On Translators' Behavior Between Truth-Seeking and Utility-Attaining: A Critical Study of Metaphor, Quotation, and Rhetorical Question in the English Translations of Tian Gong Kai Wu

Abstract: Tian Gong Kai Wu carries the wisdom of China's scientific and technological civilization in the 17th century.Its unique literary rhetoric constructs the textual characteristics of the integration of science and technology with humanity.Based on the theory of translator behavior criticism,selecting Ren's translation,Li's translation and Wang's translation of Tian Gong Kai Wu as the research objects,through objective description and comparative analysis methods,and combined with the“Truth-seeking-Utility-atainning” evaluative model of continuum,this study examines the translator behaviors of metaphor,quotation and rhetorical question.The research finds that Ren's translation has achieved the best balance between truth-seeking and utility-attaining, with the highest degree ofrationalityof the translator's behavior; Li's translation leans towards utility-attaining, emphasizing formal equivalence while taking information transmission into account, but is relatively limited in terms of behavioral degree of rationality; and Wang's translation leans towards truth-seeking, emphasizing the accurate transmission of scientific and technological information with the moderate degree of rationality of the translator's behavior.These differences stem from the combined effect of internal elements such as the rhetorical differences between English and Chinese and external elements such as the translator's identity and sponsorship mechanism.In view of this,it is proposed that the self-discipline of translators' behaviors should focus on the practical orientation of information readability,and take into account the principle of truth-seeking guided by the sufficiency of cultural aesthetics,so as to reproduce the dual characteristics of information type and expression type of the English translations of classical science and technology,and further highlight the diverse values of ancient Chinese science and technology culture.
