The Shanghai Regional Committee of the CPC and the Naigai Cotton Mill Strike in the Summer of 1926

Abstract:In the summer of 1926,the Shanghai Regional Party Commitee organized commemorativeactivities marking the firstanniversary of the May3Oth Movement,rekindling the fervor of the workers’movement.Building on this momentum,workers atthe Japanese-owned Naigai Coton Millin Xiaoshadu,Shanghai,initiatedastrike. When the conflict reached an impasse,the Shanghai Regional Commitee of the CPC swiftly intervened,facilitating negotiations between the workers and factory management while also mobilizing broader social support through the trade unions for relief efforts.Following theconclusion of the initial strike,the“Chen Atang case,”involving the Japanese side,further galvanized national sentiment among workers.In response to the evolving circumstances,the Shanghai Regional Committeof theCPCcalledforageneral strike throughout the Naigai Cotton Mill. Despite the chalenges posed by last-minute strategic adjustments and internal disagreements,the CPC and the trade unions persevered,overcoming setbacks and positioning themselves to addressthe emerging challenges.
