To Oppose and to Unite： The Debates of the CPC European Group with the Anarchistsin theInternational CommunistMovement

Abstract： The debates between the CPC European group and the Gongyu Society regarding Soviet Russia and the roleof proletarian political partiesunfolded within the context of international socialist thought，which was closely related to the Comintern’s eforts to build a United Front of the proletariat.The Gongyu Society，under the influence of the European anarchists，actively denounced the Russan Revolution as a“failure”due to the so-called “Bolshevik dictatorship，”and it advocated for workers’self-management.In response，the Chinese Communists in Europe，drawing on the perspectives of theCominternand the French Communist Party，initiall focused on explaining theeconomicand political crises in Soviet Rusia，and then shifted their focus to clarifying therelationship between class and political parties，emphasizing the necesity of Communist leadership in revolution.The Comintern’s shift in stance toward anarchism changed the trajectory of the debate，prompting the Chinese Communists to abandon their previous avoidance of direct criticismand instead to condemn the anarchists’pety-bourgeois nature and counter-revolutionary tendencies.
