" Mass-based” Weapons ： The Production of Hand Grenades in the Resistance Base Areasbehind Enemy Lines

Abstract： Folowing the eruption of nationwide resistance against Japanese aggression，the CPC underwent more thanfouryearsof trialsandultimately establisheda fundamental guideline for military production：the mass-scale manufacture of“mass-based” weapons，such as hand grenades and landmines. Subsequently，the CPC actively mobilized the people to developa three-tiered ordnance manufacturing system that was aligned with the threetiered armed forces structure composed of military regions，military sub-regions，and counties and with a focus on the later two tiers.The CPC also recruited skilledartisans from the civilian sector to join itsmanufacturing efforts，embodying the principle of“mass-based” weapons produced bythe masses.Meanwhile，ordnance factories at various levels inthe resistance base areas simplified the production processes and made every efort to source materials locally，thereby localizing the manufacture of hand grenades.To some extent，the hand grenade became a symbol—its production and deployment embodied the tangible application of the doctrine of people's war.
