The CPC’s Views and Policies on Britain during the Period of the Second KMT-CPC Cooperation and Their Impact(1937-1940)
Wen Cheng
Abstract:Before the July 7th Incident in1937,the CPC adapted the policies of the Comintern to thespecific Chinese realities and advocated for the establishmentof a World Anti-Fascist UnitedFront, which included cooperation with Britain,France, andthe United States, whileit also developedanational united front against Japanese aggresson based on cooperation between the KMT and the CPC.Afterthe signing of the Soviet-German pact, relations between Britain and the Soviet Union deteriorated. The CPC believed that Britain might ally with Japan against the Soviet Union, pressuring China into ceasing hostilities and creating a“Far Eastern Munich.”Meanwhile, the CPC,plagued by the anti-Communist activities of the KMT diehards, was deeply concerned that the KMT government might join the British-Japan camp and oppose both the Soviet Union and the CPC.In response, the CPC vigorously pushed the KMT to adopt anti-British and pro-Soviet policies while maintaining KMT-CPC cooperation in the war against Japan.Throughout this process, the CPC consistentlyprioritized preservation of the unityof the KMT-CPCanti-Japanese coalition as its foremost objective. It adeptly managed both domestic and international relations, thereby ensuring a maximization of its national interests.
