Abstract: Near-field ground motions inflict greater structural damage than far-field ground motions,so their precise demarcation is necessary for seismic design. In this study,417 ground motion records of M7.0 earthquakes were collected to analyze correlations between the epicentral distance and parameters, including the peak ground acceleration (PGA), peak ground velocity (PGV), PGV/PGA ratio, and relative duration. Ground motion prediction equations and the Yu Yanxiang model were used to investigate attenuation characteristics for various site classifications.Based on fitting correlations,a novel demarcation parameter—the ratio of PGA to relative duration (PGA/S)-was proposed. Plots of PGA/S versus the epicentral distance were drawn in double logarithmic coordinates across different site classes to establish classification criteria for M7.0 near-field and far-field ground motions. This study is expected to serve as a valuable reference for defining and classfying ground motions across varying magnitudes and site conditions.
