Lin Shu's behavior of upholding confucian orthodoxy： a case study of Hai Wai Xuan Qu Lu

Abstract：Lin Shu’s translation of Hai Wai Xuan Qu Lu represents an early Chinese translation of Jonathan Swift's Gullver's Travels.Analyzing Hai Wai Xuan Qu Lu within the framework of translator behavior reveals thatLin Shu engaged in extensive rewritings of the original text toalign it with established traditional ideological paradigms.Inhistranslatedrendition，he crafted a textual realm that harmonized with core traditional Chinese values，presenting a narrative where filial piety ispracticed and imperial grace is venerated.Through an exploration of Lin Shu’s extra-translation behavir，this study delves into the underlying motivations guiding his intra-translation decisions.It posits that Lin Shu's ethical stance，coupled with his sense of identity，propelled him to undertake the translation behavior of upholding Confucian Orthodoxy by promoting filial piety and upholding imperial grace.
