Abstract:Accuratelyidentifying coreandcriticaltechnologies inimportantindustrial sectors,clarifyingtechnological gaps,and assessing therisksof being "strangled"bysupplychaindisruptions are of paramount importance forfocused research anddevelopment efforts.Building uponareview ofexisting literature oncoreandcritical technology identification,thisessybeginsbydefiningtheconceptofsuchtechnologies,distilingthreekeycharacteristics,and summarizingthegeneralprocessthatshouldbefollowedfortheiridentification.Additionally,itoutlines futureresearch directions.Coreandcriticaltechnologiesshouldexhibitthree definingfeatures:technological criticality,corevalue,and long-termcumulativeeffects.The framework foridentifying these technologiesshould progressystematically through domain selection,data preparation,method selection,and resultvalidation.Future research should focus on leveraging large-scaleartificial intelligence modelsto identifycoreandcritical technologies,therebyadvancing thesimplification and accuracy of the identification process.
