Title: Silence, Auscultation, Chant: Auditory Narratology and the Construction of Female Communities in Snow Flower and the Secret Fan
Abstract: Lisa See's Snow Flower and the Secret Fan explores women's experiences through distinctive Chinese cultural elements such as nūshu, engaging with issues of female subjectivity and the construction of female community. Drawing on Auditory Narratology, this article examines representations of women's auditory perception in the novel, including the presence and absence of voice, practices of overhearing and auscultation, nūshu chanting, and the auditory space they produce. It demonstrates how female characters use voice to challenge patriarchal constraints, awaken subjectivity, and construct a supportive female community. The article argues that auditory narration in the novel operates not only as a key mechanism for resisting social discipline and fostering female subjectivity, but also as a culturally and politically charged narrative practice. Auditory Narratology not only enriches the interpretive pathways of community representation in Chinese American literature but also offers a new research perspective on the politics of voice inthese works.
