Title: Hope in the Void: The Superhero Comics and Their Cultural Production in The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay
Abstract: Michael Chabon's The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay, a Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, reconstructs the historical picture of the golden age of American comics. By narrating the struggles of Kavalier and Clay, a pair of Jewish comic authors, Chabon intertextually writes about the existential dilemma of Jewish immigrants during the World War II and the mechanism of the popular culture industry, which is culturally archaeological in significance. The superhero “Escapist” created by Kavalier and Clay nurtures the hope of victory over the Nazis and the pursuit of freedom, but this superhero image has been co-opted by the dominant ideology at that time: the historical suffering of the Jews has been replaced by a universalized heroic narrative of the entertainment industry. The young Jews in the field of cultural production struggle in the midst of illusion and chaos. Combining his own experience in the culture industry, Chabon builds up a fantasy world of art to delight readers. However, in the meantime, it betrays Chabon's powerlessness, i.e., it is difficult to avoid being co-opted by American dominant ideology and reduced to a symbol of capital when contemplating such a serious topic like the Holocaust in the era of neoliberalism through the popular themes such as superhero comics.
