Title： Zhang Zhidong's Pathways of State Translation Governance and Their Generative Logic

Abstract： Zhang Zhidong exercised governance by translation and conducted governance over translation in Hubei province during the late Qing Dynasty， which was a typical example of regional practice of state translation governance. Under the guidance of functional interplay of state， translation and governance， this paper systematically examines Zhang's translation goverance activities in Hubei by a historical and theoretical analysis. Pathways of his translation governance are identified： commissioned translation， self-run translation， jointly-run translation agency， patronage of translators， state-backed publication and distribution， cultivation of translators，and translation regulations. Lack of translators， insuficient funding and heavy translation tasks on a tight schedule lead to the generation of these pathways in Hubei. The paper also attempts to chart a roadmap for these pathways and explores their mechanism， providing a historical experiential reference for the research of state translation governance.
