Title: Food Consumption and Identity Politics in Jubilee
Abstract: In Margaret Walker’s novel Jubilee, the depiction of food holds a position of great significance.Food consumption is not only a life activity for human beings to satisfy their survival needs, but it also implies profound cultural and political meanings. Based on consumption theories, this paper explores the symbolic meanings of food consumption and its political implications in Jubilee. It further probes into the complex connection between food consumption and identity politics. In this work, the strong political nature of food consumption makes it a symbol of different social classes. As a political tool for different classes to protect their interests, the political nature of food consumption makes it a means for the slaveholder to maintain slavery and a necessary weapon for the survival and development of the slave. The game of food consumption is an extension of the power struggle between the slaveholder and the slave regarding food consumption. By deeply analyzing the food consumption politics in “Jubilee”,we can gain insight into the complex interaction between African American consumption behaviour and national politics and economy in African American women's literature.
