Title: Construction of Du Fu's Image in American Translations of His Poetry
Abstract: This paper examines the construction of Du Fu's image within American translations of his poetry for more than a century. Beginning with sporadic renditions in the late l9th century, the study mainly traces the trajectory of Du Fu's reception since the early 2Oth century, which progressed toward systematic and localized interpretations. The analysis demonstrates that American translators have continually been engaged in the construction of Du Fu's image through their selection of poems, translation strategies, and paratextual elaborations. While they have rendered Du Fu a multifaceted and culturally resonant figure within American literary context, these constructive efforts have also been significantly influenced by mistranslation, cultural filtration, and creative adaptation, thus fundamentally characterized as a dynamic cycle of “misreading and reconstruction.” In essence, the “Du Fu” presented in American translations is a figure reconstructed through cross-cultural interpretations, revealing a palpable tension with the poet's original stature in the Chinese classical tradition. This phenomenon not only illuminates the complex mechanism of literary transmisson across cultures, but also underscores the theoretical necessity and practical urgency for a more profound and authentic understanding of Du Fu's poetry in the West.
