Title：The“Midlife Crisis”and its Ethical Literary Questions in Hanif Kureishi' Novel Intimacy
Abstract： As the outstanding representative of the younger generation of British South-Asian novelists，Hanif Kureishi's literary contribution mainly lies in his social depiction of immigrant family lives. Kureishi’s novel Intimacy centers on the male protagonist Jay’s problems with “midlife crisis”，presenting his marriage crisis and monologue of“The Seven Year Itch” in narrative form， and social and ideological transformations of family and marriage during the Thatcherite Era. Targeting on the novel's narrative discourse of“midlife crisis”，this essay applies ethical literary criticism methodology，figures out four critical dimensions such as marriage， class，affection and identity， and explores the male protagonist Jay's anti-Bildung narrative and its ethical construction， while discusses the implied cultural identity narrative and its ethical dilemma in Kureishi's immigrant writing.
