Abstract:Thevolume scatering function(VSF)of aquatic particles is oneof the most important inherent optica properties of water.However,a VSF measurement instrument in China that can cover multiple wavelengths and a wide angular range remains to be investigated. Herein,we developed a dual-wavelength ( 488nm and 532nm )aquaticparticle VSF measurement system that integrates dual-periscope optical configuration with arotating detector.This system enables VSF measurements across a scattering angle range of 1.5∘~178.5∘ for both wavelengths. According to the optical configurationandradiativetransferprinciplesof thesystem,baselinecorrction,angularcalibration,andamplitude calibration experiments were conducted on the system. The measurement results for 3μm polystyrene standard particles agreed wellwith the Mie scatering theoretical values,demonstrating theVSF measurementaccuracyof the system.The system was usedtoperformdual-wavelength VSF measurements of natural seawater particles from theEast China Sea and South China Seaand toanalyze the diferences in VSF characteristics between the two wavelengths.The measured VSFs canprovidea basisforVSFparameterizationintheradiative transfermodels.Inadion,asymmetry factors were calculated from the measureddatatoanalyze the diferences in scattring characteristics between the two wavelengths from the volume scattering perspective.
