Abstract：This paper presents Professor CHEN Hong's clinical experience in stage-specific treatment of gout. Professor CHEN holds that thecore pathogenesis of gout is "root deficiency with branch excess，"in which spleenkidneydeficiency constitutes therot，turbid phlegmand blood stasis interwine as the branch，and disturbed qi movement inthetripleenergizerservesasthepivotal link.Internalaccumulationofturbidtoxins persists throughoutthe disease course and closely corelates with hyperuricemiaand inflammatory responses in modern medicine.In clinical practice，he treats by stages：during asymptomatic hyperuricemia，he focuses on resolving phlegm and descending turbidity with Chinese medicines such as Smilacis Glabrae Rhizoma，Coicis Semen and Dioscorea Hypoglauca together with medicated diet；during acute atacks，he emphasizes clearing heat，resolving phlegm，unblocking colaterals， and relieving pain；in the intercritical period，hecombines atackand supplementation，strengthening spleen and kidney while draining damp-turbidity；and inthechronicarthritic stage，he takes fortifies spleenand kidneyas the main strategy，asisted by unblocking collaterals and dispersing masses with modifications of the clasic Siteng Yixian Decoction.He stresses thre key principles：toreinforce the kidneyandregulatethespleen whilecombining tonification with unblocking，to harmonize qi movement of the tripleenergizer，and to treat both phlegmand stasis tounblock collateralsand eliminate masss.Clinicalpresriptionsareselectedand modifiedaccordingtosyndromediferentiationat each stage，andmodern pharmacological findingsareintegrated to employuric-acid-lowering herbs，yielding favorable therapeutic outcomes.
