The Ten Key Contradictions in School Physical Education Curriculum Reform

Abstract: Since China’s reform and opening up, nine national curriculum documents have been issued to promote physical education (PE) curriculum reform in schools; however, significant contradictions persist, resulting in limited practical effectiveness at the grassroots level. Drawing on extensive frontline experience in promoting school PE curriculum reforms,and feedback from grassroots PE researchers and teachers,this study systematically identifies and deeply analyzes the ten key contradictions currently impeding high-quality progress in school PE curriculum reform. These contradictions include: the stability of national sports strategy versus variability of PE reform policies; national reform initiatives versus insufficient grassroots motivation; innovative curriculum concepts versus entrenched traditional teaching habits; schools’and students’demands versus PE teachers' inadequate responses; new curriculum requirements versus insuficient teachers' competence; rigorous training and character development versus student-centered approaches; curriculum reform versus PE exam-oriented phenomena; continuous improvements in teaching conditions versus delayed enhancement of teaching quality; effective PE teaching versus concerns about sports safety; and the long-term development of school sports specialties versus frequent changes in school leadership.The study argues that effectively addressing these contradictions requires comprehensive strategies involving stable national strategic guidance, continuous reform policy coherence, improved professional competencies of teachers, targeted resource investments, enhanced safety assurance systems,and optimized collaboration mechanisms among multiple stakeholders. These measures will help guide school PE curriculum reform towards a path of highquality and sustainable development.
