Effects of Methodological Differences on Allelopathy of Leaf Litter from Invasive Weeds

Abstract:Toclarifyefectsofmethodologicaldiferencesonallelopathyofleaflitterfrominvasiveweeds,Sphagneticola trilobata(L.)Pruski,Solidago canadensis L.and Erigeron canadensis L.were selectedastheresearch objects,andLactuca sativa var.capitata was selectedas allelopathic indicator plant.Wesystematically evaluated effectsof diffrent conditios(i.e.,drying methods,aqueous extraction duration,and mass concentrationgradients)onalelopathic propertiesoftheirleavf liter.Theresultsshowedthatconcentrationof theextract increased,andallelopathyoflier increased forallthree invasive weeds,which wassignificantlycorrelatedwiththemass concentration of littr.The inhibition of medium ( 25g/L )and high( 50g/L )concentration liter extract on lettuce was significant after soaking theleaf literfor24 hoursor48hours.Different drying methodshaddifferent effectsonalelopathy.For example,the air-dried S trilobata litter extract had the best inhibition.Interaction on alelopathy varied with plant species,and interaction between drying method and concentration was the most significant.Litters of S .trilobata and S .canadensis showed significant triple interaction on the seed germination and seedling biomass of .canadensis litter onlyshowedsignificanttriple interactiononseedlingbiomass.Therefore,allelopathyof invasive weeds litter highly corelated withconcentrationoflitterand soaking time,andallelopathy intensityof each invasive weedsalsovaries with thedrying method. While soaking time was prolonged,and alelochemicals were gradually approaching saturation.
