Evidence summary of perioperative nutritional management for patients undergoing metabolic and bariatric surgery

Abstract Objective:To summarize the relevant evidence of perioperative nutritional management for patients undergoing metabolic and bariatric surgery and to provide an evidence-based basis for clinical application.Methods:All relevant evidence including guidelines,recommended practices,clinical decision-making,systematic reviews,evidence summaries,expert consensus,and randomized controlled trials(RCTs) were retrieved from UpToDate,BMJ Best Practices,Joanna Briggs Institute of Australia,International Federation of Obesity and Metabolic Diseases,PubMed,and CNKI.The search period was from April 19,2014,to April 19,2024.Multiple researchers independently evaluated the quality of the literature,extracted,and summarized the evidence of the included literature.Results:A total of 21 articles were included,including 3 guidelines,5 clinical decision-making,4 systematic reviews,1 RCT,and 8 expert consensuses.A total of 35 pieces of evidence were summarized from 7 aspects:preoperative dietary management,postoperative dietary management,nutritional monitoring,macronutrient management,micronutrient management,nutrition of complications,and nutritional follow-up after discharge.Conclusions:When the summarized relevant evidence of perioperative nutritional management of patients undergoing metabolic and bariatric surgery is applied and transformed.Medical staff should consider the actual situation of the patients and formulate personalized treatment plans to help them to improve the clinical outcomes of patients undergoing bariatric metabolic surgery.
