More Reading, More Happiness? Exploring the Relationship Between Reading Behavior and Mental Health: Empirical Evidence from CGSS Data

AbstractReading behaviour haslong beenregarded as an effective way to alleviate depressive emotions and promote mental health.However,existing literature often focuses on theoretical discussions,lacking systematic empirical evidenceto substantiate the relationship between reading and depressive emotions.This study draws ondata from the Chinese General Social Survey (CGSS)to empirically examine the complex relationship between reading behaviour and depressive emotions.Overall,the findings indicate a negativecorrelation between reading and depressive emotions, suggesting that reading helps relieve psychological stress and reduce depresive symptoms,thereby exhibiting a “therapeutic efect". When analysed across subgroups,the“therapeutic effect”of reading varies significantly by age, education level,and income level.Moreover,the effects diferbetween readers who preferprint readingand those who favour digitalreading.Basedonthese fidings,itisrecommendedthat eforts tooptimizereadingservices forthegeneral population shouldtake intoaccount the diverse needs of diferent demographic groups andreading preferences.Tailored, personalized service strategies should be developed to beter harness the potential of nationwide reading initiatives in advancing the“Healthy China” strategy.
