【Abstract】Metabolic associated fatty liver disease has emerged in recent years as a highly prevalent metabolic liver disease worldwide. Its pathogenesis is closely linked to metabolic disorders such as obesity, insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes mellitus, and hypertension, as well as behavioral and environmental factors including diet, physical inactivity, and occupational exposures. Recent studies have demonstrated that the disease spectrum of MAFLD can progress from simple steatosis to fibrosis, cirrhosis, and even hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), with its natural course influenced by multiple determinants. This review summarizes the epidemiological characteristics of MAFLD and provides an updated overview of research on metabolic, lifestyle, and occupation-related risk factors. It further discusses disease progression pathways, potential reversibility, and current intervention strategies, aiming to inform comprehensive prevention and control efforts and support public health management of MAFLD.
