The character “Min，” an abbreviation for Fujian Province， is represented in seal script as a snake coiled inside a doorway. Xu Shen， a Han Dynasty scholar， explained in his dictionary Shuowen Jiezi that “Min”refers to the southeastern Yue people， known as the “snake tribe，” highlighting the cultural significance of snake totems in ancient Fujian.
