Abstract: Subsurface wastewater infiltration system(SWIS) is a land treatment method combining physical, chemical, and biological reactions to purify was tewater. This study evaluated the influence of organic loading and aeration mode(intermittent aeration and continuous aeration)on matrix oxidation-reduction potential(ORP),biological oxygen demand(BOD) removal, NH4+ -N removal,TN removal and N2O emission in SWISs. Aeration developed aerobic conditions in the matrix above 50cm depth and anoxic or anaerobic conditions in the lower matrix below 80cm depth. Intermittent aeration and continuous aeration improved BOD, NH4+-N and TN removal under organic loading of 16.2 and 27.8g BOD/ (m2⋅d) compared to the non-aerated SWIS. N2O emission decreased with organic loading increasing in non-aerated and aerated SWISs. The SWIS with intermittent aeration had a better performance on TN removal and lower N2O emission compared to the SWIS with continuous aeration under the same organic loading. Under organic loading of 16.2g BOD/ (m2d) ,intermittent aeration SWIS achieved high BOD, NH4+ -N,TN removal efficiencies of 96.0% , 93.5% , 89.4% and low N2O emission rate of 13.1mg/(m2⋅d) ,respectively. It could conclude that intermittent aeration is a feasible method to win high organic loading, high TN removal and low N2O emission for SWISs.
