Status quo and influencing factors of communicating bad news among ICU nursing staff in Anhui province
Abstract Objective:To explore the impact of ICU nurses' psychological resilience and mental climate on their ability of communicating bad news, providing a basis for the development of intervention measures to improve ICU nursing staff's ability to communicate bad news.Methods:From December 1, 2022 to January 31, 2023,559 ICU nurses from 23 hospitals in Anhui province were selected as the research subjects. General information questionnaire,Communicating Bad News Scale, 10-item Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale, Chinese version of the Spiritual Climate Scale were used for investigation.Results:The communicating bad news score of ICU nurses was (71.19±16.01).Psychological resilience and mental climate were positively correlated with the ability of communicating bad news (r=0.569,0.499,P<0.01).Psychological resilience,mental climate,whether they were ICU specialist nurses, and whether they had experienced workplace violence in the past year were the influencing factors of communicating bad news among ICU nursing staff, which could explain 36.3% of the total variation.Conclusion:ICU nursing staff's ability to communicate bad news is at a moderate level. Nursing managers should improve the mental climate of ICU nurses in clinical work, strengthen the construction of psychological resilience of ICU nurses, and carry out training programs based on the influencing factors of communicating bad news among ICU nursing staff, so as to improve their ability of communicating bad news.
