Abstract:Horsetailfaultsaretypicalstructureswithinthetipdamagezonesofstrike-slipfaultsandserveasimportantcriteriafor identifyngstrik-slipfultsonplanarmaps.Teyareidelydevelopedinvariousgeologicalenvironments,speciallinsal-scale strike-slipfultsmswiinatoniciteosuetlyhreisstlotroersgaingttureosealflts,ithn unclearunderstandingoftheirspecificdevelopmentprocssandthecontrollingfactorsoftheirformationandevolutionThelackof physicalsmulationexperimentalresultsassupportingevdencehindersfaultidentificationcorrelationanalsis,equenealysis andthestudyoftectonicbackgroundrestorationincertainresearchareas.Usingquartzsandasthematerial,aphysicalsimulation studywasconuctedeoseailfulttoarifitsropeiscosuctitseveopntpocesndalyetollg factorsforitsformationandevolutionHorsetailfaultscanexhibitbothextensionalandcompresionalcharacteristicsandtheir developmentocus asstrike-slipfaultsprogessfromwalldamage zones totidamagezons.Maincontrolingfactorsincludefault displacement, lateral stress,caprock thickness and non-penetrating degree.
