Effect of Substatic Concentrations of Ciprofloxacin, Mupirocin and Fusidic Acid on the Sensitivity of Staphylococcus aureus

Abstract: ObjectiveTo investigate the efect of subinhibitory concentrations of ciprofloxacin, mupirocin and fusidic acidonthesensitivityofStaphylococcus aureus in vitro.MethodsStandardstrains andanumberof clinically isolated Staphylococcus aureus strains that were susceptible to ciprofloxacin,mupirocin and fusidic acid were combined to generate the experimental strains.All strains were cultured for atotal of three days in the subinhibitory concentration of 0.5×MIC . AGAR ratio dilution method was used to compare the changes of strains against the three drugs MICs before and after culture.ResultsThe MICsof ciprofloxacin, mupirocin and fusidic acid were significantlyincreased (P<0.05) ,and Mupirocin MICswere more significantly increased, followed by ciprofloxacin, and fusidic acid had the least change ( P<0.001 ).When the induction period was extended, the rise in ciprofloxacin MICs accelerated graduall,the rise inMICs for macroloxacinrose quickly atfirst,and thechange in MICs for fusidic acid was not statisticallsignificant.ConclusionMupiroxacin is more susceptible to drug resistance in the treatment of Staphylococcus aureus infection, ciprofloxacin is second and fusidic acid is almost not resistant.
