Analysis of Point Selection Rules in Acupuncture and Moxibustion for Postherpetic Neuralgia Based on Data Mining Technology

Abstract：Objective：To analyze the point selection rules in acupuncture and moxibustion for postherpetic neuralgia （PHN） based on data mining technology.Methods：Clinical research literatureonacupuncture and moxibustion for PHN was retrieved from CNKI，CBM，WanFang，and VIP databases up to January 2025.A database of acupunctureand moxibustion prescriptions for PHN was established to analyze point frequency，distribution， association rules analysis，and clustering analysis.Results：A total of349 articles containing 356 acupuncture and moxibustion prescriptions were included，involving 98 points and16 high-frequency points.The most frequently used pointswere Jiaji（EX-B2）point，Ashi points，and Zusanli（ST36）point.The spleen，large intestine，and galbladder meridians were themost commonly selected meridians，with points predominantly located in the lower limbs，back/lumbosacral region，and upper limbs.Nineteen strong association rules were identified，e.g.，Zhigou （TE6）-Taichong （LR3）-Yanglingquan（GB34），and Fengchi （GB2O）-Quchi （LI11）-Yanglingquan（GB34）））.Cluster analysis grouped high-frequency points into three categories.Conventional acupuncture，fire needling，and electroacupuncture were the most frequently employed techniques.Conclusion：Acupuncture and moxibustion treats PHN by inhibiting peripheral and central sensitization.Core points include Jiaji （EX-B2）point，Ashi points，and Zusanli（ST36）point，with Zhigou（TE6）-Taichong（LR3）-Yanglingquan（GB34） forming the principal combination.Point selection folows the principles of local/proximal selection and taking pain points as points， emphasizing syndrome diffrentiation and simultaneous treatment of root and manifestation.
