Improvement of Arc-Extinguishing Performance of Small DC Circuit Breakers Based on Magnetohydrodynamic Simulation

Abstract:To enhance the arc-extinguishing performance of small DC circuit breakers,the principles related to DC arcsare reviewed,and three types of arc splitter plates with different lengthsare designed.Modeling and simulation are carried out onthe arcchamber of aspecific small DC circuit breakerbefore and after improvement. The simulation results show that the arc-extinguishing performanceof the improvedarc chamberis betterthan thatof theoriginalone.Underdifferent inletvelocities,thehigher the inlet velocity,thebeter thearc-extinguishing performance.Three types of testprototypes are manufactured,and electrical endurance testsare conducted in accordance with GB/T14048.2—202O Low-Voltage Suitchgear and Controlgear—Part2:Circuit breakers.The make-break time of each openingand closing operation is recorded andaveraged.The test resultsshow that the averagemake-break timeof the prototype with theimprovedarcchamber isshorter,and theaverage make-break time of the prototype with gas-generating material placedabove the moving andstationarycontacts isalso shorter. The consistency between thesimulationandtestresultsisverified,which provides areference forproduct performance optimization.
