Evaluation of shade tolerance for flower border plants based on AHP

Abstract:【Objective】This study aims to establish a comprehensive evaluationsystem for the shade tolerance of flower borderplants in Nantong area,addressing the lack ofscientificbasis for plant selectioninsemi-shadedenvironments. 【Method]Basedontheanalytic hierarchyprocess (AHP),a modelwas constructed with threecriterionlayers (ornamental value,ornamentalperiod,andadaptability)andtenspecificevaluation indicators.Through expertscoring andweight calculation,42selected flower borderplantswerequantitativelyassessedand clasified.【Result】Weightanalysis revealedthatecologicaladaptability(weightO.1771)andcommunitystability(weightO.1771)were thecore indicators determining the applicationvalueof shade-tolerant plants.Basedon comprehensive scores,the plants were classified into four grades:13 species as Grade I( ⩾4.0 points),characterized by vigorous growth,high ornamental value,and low maintenance requirements,are recommendedascore materials for shady flower borders:13 species as Grade II( ⩾3.5 points),suitable for selective application:8 speciesas Grade III( ⩾3.0 points),which can be used cautiously as accents: and 8 species as Grade IV( <3.0 points),which are not recommended for use.【Conclusion】The evaluation system establishedinthisstudycombinesscientificrigorwithpracticalapplicability,anditsresultscanbedirectlyapplied tothe selectionandconfigurationofplantsforflowerbordersinsemi-shadedenvironments.Itholdssignificantpractical valuefor advancing the development of low-maintenance and sustainable landscape architecture.
