Comparison of Production Performance and Salt Tolerance during Germination Process of 27 Medicago sativa L. Varieties in Yellow River Irrigation Area of Ningxia

Abstract Medicago sativa is a high-yielding and high-qualityperennial leguminous forage grasswith certain salt tolerance,buttherearesignificant diferences insalttoleranceamong diffrentvarieties.To improvetheutilization effciencyofsaline-alkali landand provide high-qualityprotein feed,theproductionperformanceandsalttolerance atthegermination stage of 27 Medicagosativa varieties inthe Yellow River irrigationareaof Ningxia were evaluated.The NaCl stress test showed that‘Guochanmuxu 2’was more sensitive to salt,while‘Saiwo 5’, ‘Qianjing’and‘Zhongmu No.3’showed strong salt tolerance.These varieties outperformed other varieties in relative germination rate,relative germination energy and germination speed.‘Qianjing’,‘SK3010’,‘Daoqi’, ‘Weishen’and‘Zhongmu No.4’showed beter production performance in the irrigation area.Based on the analysis ofyieldand germination characteristics,‘Qianjing’and‘Zhongmu No.3’were preliminarily selected as suitable salt-tolerant Medicago satia varieties forplanting intheYellowRiver irigationarea of Ningxia.Thisstudy provides ascientific basis forthescreeningand improvement ofsalt-tolerant Medicagosativa varieties intheYelowRiver irrigation area of Ningxia.
