The Influence of Chinese Traditional Sports Culture onthe ConfucianismofKoreanPeninsula

Abstract：Thevilagearcheryritual，whichoriginatedintheZhoudynasty，haddevelopedthroughtheMingperiodtopossess both moralobservationand militarypreparednessatributes，with greateremphasisonthefunctionof“militaryarchery”.To realizetheConfucian idealof“transforming barbariansinto Chinese”，ancient Koreandidnotemulateitssuzerainstate's “militaryarchery”，butinsteadpromotedthegovernance-educationefectivenessoftheZhoudynasty'svilagearcheryritualof “observing virtue througharchery".Through thededication made byKing Seongjongand several generations of monarchsand ministers，thevilagearcheryritualflourishedintheearlyKoreanperiod.Afectedbywars，thevilagearcheryritual was ina stateof inconsistentimplementationduringthemiddleKoreanperiod.InthelateKoreanperiod，thevilagearcheryritual regainedvitalityandbecameanimportanttolforpropagatingConfuciandoctrineandstabilizingstaterule.The implementationofthevilagearcheryritual enabledKorea toformaConfucian ideological identificationof“observingvirtue througharchery”，and madeKoreaaConfucian exemplarof“Zhouritualspreserved inLu”.Theclarityofthedevelopmental processandgovernanceeffectivenessofthevillage archeryritualinKoreaprovidesinsightinto therolethat Chinese traditionalsportscultureplayedintheformationoftheConfuciancultural sphere，highlightingitsinfluenceonthe development of east Asian sports culture.
