Mediating effect of family function between self-disclosure and stigma in young and middle-aged patients with maintenance peritoneal dialysis

Abstract Objective：To explore the mediating effect of family function between self-disclosure and stigma in young and middle-aged patients with maintenance peritoneal dialysis（PD）.Methods：A total of 158 young and middle-aged patients with maintenance PD who were admitted to two tertiary grade A hospitals in Shantou from October 2022 to August 2023 were selected as the research subjects by convenience sampling method.The Social Influence Scale，Distress Disclosure Index Scale，and Family Adaptation Partnership Growth Affection and Resolve Index Scale were used for the cross-sectional survey，correlation analysis，and mediation effect analysis.Results：Self-disclosure and family function were negatively correlated with stigma（r values were -0.537 and -0.566，both P<0.001）.Self-disclosure was positively correlated with family function（r=0.557，P<0.001）.The Bootstrap test results showed that the mediating effect of family function between self-disclosure and stigma was -0.188（95%CI -0.274--0.110），accounting for 43.7%of the total effect.Conclusions：Family function plays a partial mediating role between self-disclosure and stigma.Narrative family therapy can be used to encourage patients to express their emotions，improve family satisfaction，and reduce stigma.
