Abstract Objective：To explore the effect of external compression with a patch on preventing bleeding at the puncture point after peripherally inserted central catheters（PICC） in newborns.Methods：118 newborns who received PICC catheterization treatment in the same treatment group from September 1，2021 to June 30，2022 and met the inclusion criteria were randomly divided into a control group and an experimental group using the touch ball method，with 59 cases in each group.The experimental group used PICC puncture followed by external pressure of the patch on the puncture site;the control group was treated with PICC puncture followed by compression of the puncture site within the patch.Compare the number of times the patch was replaced，the 24 h bleeding rate at the puncture site，the duration of bleeding，and the incidence of complications between two groups of pediatric patients within 7 days after puncture.Results：The number of patch replacements within 7 days in the experimental group was lower than that in the control group，and the 24 h bleeding rate and duration at the puncture point were lower than those in the control group，with statistically significant differences（P<0.05）;There was no statistically significant difference in the incidence of complications between the two groups（P>0.05）.Conclusion：The external compression method with patch can effectively reduce the bleeding rate and time at the puncture point after PICC catheterization，and improve nursing quality and work efficiency.
