Composite Percussive Rock Breaking Mechanism in Deep Strata of Xihu Block,East China Sea Basin

Abstract:The improvement of rate of penetration(ROP)in deep,high confining pressure formations is closely related to therock breaking method.In the Xihu block of the East China Sea Basin,thepercussive rock breaking method is mainly used to improve ROP.In this paper,a numerical model of dynamic damage in composite percussive rock breaking was built using ANSYS-LS-Dyna.During the simulation,by considering the axial and circumferential impact loads on the bit,the percusson frequency,and the static-dynamic load action time ratio, the influences of percussion frequency and static/dynamic load action time on the penetration depth of the cutter, the rock damage after drilling,and the cuttings morphology were analyzed.The results show that the stress waves of different frequencies have varying degrees of atenuation in the medium,and higher-frequency stress waves attenuate faster,leading toa decrease in rock breaking efect.As the static-dynamic load action time ratio increases,thevibration amplitude at the penetration depth weakens,the cuting surface becomes smooth,and the volume of cuttings formed by rock breaking tend to decrease.The study results have been applied in deep wels in the Xihu block,and provide atheoreticalbasis for further understanding the composite percussive rock breaking mechanism in deep strata and optimizing the engineering parameters of percussion tools.
